If anything, towing (high duty cycle) is where diesels shine, due to their much leaner air/fuel ratio under load. Cruising at 65 mph, my Hemi is within 20% of an ED. But towing 9000 lbs, I bet the diesel is 50% more efficient.
We caravaned for 3 days with a EcoD in the mirrors. All of us had moderate sized toy haulers set up for dog shows so no motorcycles or ATVs in the back. Doing 500 miles a day I got 13.68 and my friend got 9.6mpg both hand calculated with GPS and two clicks of the gas pump. I think the speed kept him in too much boost to make it very efficient.
