This topic is probably one of the most misunderstood on this forum, and there are many misunderstood topics. :) While the torque curves of these engines may not be totally flat, they are probably pretty close. The torque output of my 1.8L direct injected gas turbo VW is constant from 1500-4500 rpm. Of course as a result it has 3 times the hp at 4500 rpm as it does at 1500. An interesting side note, many of the very large OTR diesels have flat power curves. The 14L Detroit Series 60 we use in our fire trucks is specced at 515 hp from 1200-2100 rpm. As a result, torque falls off as engine speed increases.
