I don't own a garage and I prefer a long bed but the work I do requires a lot of parking garages and tight spaces to maneuver in so the short bed works better for me. On our way back from north Florida this past weekend at a rest area on I-75, we saw another F250 CC SB with it's 5th wheel hitch mounted behind the axle by what appeared to be about 12"~. Their 5th wheel was a little larger than ours but still not a heavy weight. I've seen several like this and read of several more with the owners saying they can't tell the difference on the road. So, I bought myself a second set of bed rails and I'm just about done with the install putting the pin 52" behind the glass or 12" behind the axle. We'll be taking a short trip within the next couple of weeks and I'll let you know the verdict. Doing the math, our 1700 lbs of pin will take about 130 lbs off the front axle and add it to the rear. For comparison, a 500 lb tongue on the ball 60" behind the axle takes about 190 lbs off the front axle.
