I towed that 12k 5er through and over the Canadian Rockies with no issues at all. By that I mean the engine and trans performed well, no overheating etc. On grades, there was only one time I had it to the floor and was unable to gain speed. To climb those steep grades, it did shift down and run 5000+ RPM. That didn't bother me as I knew that's what was needed to pull a combined 21,000# load up a hill.
It mostly towed with cruise and the A/C on at 2200 RPM in 5th gear, and would downshift to 4th or 3rd when needed on rolling hills.
Here's a video I made of my set up 4 years ago. Note that at the time the RV was just out of storage, not loaded for a trip so I used the UVW as a stat in the video. After this video I weight it and it was just under 12k and the GCW was around 20,500#.
