Ram 2500 Towing Help!

I have a 2016 Ram 2500 with the 5.7 Hemi engine. I am looking to get a 32 ft fifth wheel with a weight of 8500 lbs and I want to make sure my truck will be able to tow it.I live in the Midwest. Any advice will be appreciated.

  • I have a 2013, long bed, crew cab, not 4x4, 5.7 Hemi. Towing 31'fiver. Get usually 10 mpg towing. Trailer weight just under 8,000 lbs loaded, went through CAT scale last trip out. Towed great.

Would think I could tow more weight if I wanted to trade fifth wheels. Not a whole lot, but maybe up to 1500 lbs.

  • It will suck the fuel back too. I have towed with both the 5.7 and 6.4 hemi. Like everyone says you can do it but that engine will be working.
  • Nice truck. I don't think you will have a problem going anywhere you want with that hemi and light 5er, including over mountain passes.

You will be fine. Is it the best motor for the job? No. But that trailer is in the "half-ton towable class" and you will be safer in your truck than the people pulling the same or heavier with F150s, 1500s, and Tundras.

  • You won't be going uphill very fast, but you will be just fine. Here are the numbers.

Assuming CCSB 4x4 with 3.73 gears, 11,200#. With 4.10 that jumps to 13,190#. Your trailer will be probably be around 10,500# loaded. With a 3/4T chassis, handling should be fine up to those limits.
  • As long as you stay in the midwest...no Rocky mountains to climb, you should be ok. Is the 8500 lbs dry weight? Load the trailer with everything you will need, BBQ grill, tools, chairs, water in tank, clothes, food.. then take it to a weigh scale...that will give you a real weight.
