Ram 3.21 rear end towing

Hello! New guy here with a question. I'm looking at Ram 1500's and was wondering about the 3.21 rear end. Will this ratio be able to tow a TT with a GVWR of 7500lb up grades of 7% and still keep up with traffic? Say 55 mph. I understand that actual weight will make a difference. Assume a 5.7 Hemi, 4x4, eight speed transmission. I would prefer a 2500 but the 6.4 (as well as 3.92 gearing in the 1500) seem to be non existent for 2015. Thank you for any information you may provide. I did a search before posting and did not find anything.
  • I have been looking at dealers up to 75 miles away and not a 2500 with the 6.4 on any lot that I checked. Now, that doesn't mean that if I were to check again that I still won't find one.
  • 3.21 rear end isn't putting much power to the ground. You want a lower rear end (higher number) for towing, especially in the mountains. How are you not finding 2015 Ram 2500's with the 6.4? They are all over the place around here. My buddy just bought a new one about a month ago. I was out looking around that time and everywhere I looked had 4 or 5 of the 6.4's. Of course it was hard to find the 4.10 rear axle ratio I wanted...

As an owner of a 2014 with 3.21 for a 5500lb GVWR trailer (4500 actual), with frequent mountain/hill towing I would suggest against it. Can you do it? Sure, of course.

I spent a lot of time locking out overdrive normally (non-towing) and keeping her in 5th (towing, where she bags into 3rd/4th on her own). She loves to pick gears that are out of the power band (~1500 lazy rpm) left to her own devices.... which is great if you are a high mileage flatlander.

Your question was keeping up to traffic though on ~7%er's.. yep, you will. Just be prepared to either thumb shift or press down on the right foot.
  • More than likely with a trailer of the weight, the payload of a Ram will be your limiting factor. From what I see here, Rams seem to have smaller payloads than other half tons. And assuming a 12% TW, you could easily use of 3/4 of your payload. Be sure to check on that. And good luck.
  • My 1500 was a 96 Ram with 4.10s that I spent a LOT of money putting in. It was better than the 3.55s but still struggled on hills with a 5000 lb 5th wheel. Route 80 in NJ between GSP and Del Water Gap has 5 serious hills that would slow me down to 35. Those were arduous times :) If you don't have a lot of steep hills you may be OK. I dragged that little 5er around for 2 years from NH to SC before I got my used 01 CTD dually.
  • It will, but you likely will not be happy about how well it does it.
