Ram 3500 Real Life MPG

I am looking for some real life mpg numbers on the Ram 3500 primarily for 2010, 2011 models. I am thinking about swithcing to a one ton model. Please include hand calculated numbers only. The overhead computers (at least on my 2005 2500) read two to as much as four mpg high. Please indicate what you are towing, two wheel drive vs four wheel drive, single rear wheel vs dual rear wheel, 6.7 diesel, transmission and axel ratio if known and any other factors that might be important.

I currently get between ten and eleven mpg towing my current trailer. Thanks for the information.
  • I hope your computer is more accruate than mine. Mine always reads 2 to 4 mpg high. What is your hand calculated milage?

You can see my details in my signature. My truck is a dedicated tow vehicle. I usually tow my 5er tandem with either my 5000 pound ski boat, my 2500 pound fishing boat or my 2500 pound utility trailer with ATVs.

There are a few trips with just my ski or fishing boat heading out on a 1000 mile round trip. I set speed control at 70 MPH and get 12 MPG on those trips. The last fill up was with my fishing boat going up to the mountains.

You must tow pretty fast! 10-11? Chris

That's a very nice setup there B.M. When we pull the trailer to the coast to do some extended fishing I have to make four trips for the trailer and boat.

Thanks. 4 trips is too many when I still have to work for a living. :)

Heck, 4 trips is probably too many if I am ever able to retire.
  • As a daily driver I get 13.2
Towing 5er (abt 16K lbs) in the mountains- 9.8
On a 600 mile trip from Ohio to GA 11.1

Wow, I can't offer all the pictures, but did own a 2010 and a 2012 Ram's 3500 Crew Cab/long bed, 4X4's, both with 4:10's that I used as daily drivers and towed a 16,000# 5er with that has a 3,300# pin weight......I alway's hand calc mpg....best mpg I ever got towing, (all my towing done in the mountains of WV, TN, NC, SC and VA was close to 11 mpg and as low as 9.5 or so. Best I ever got running empty on a trip was 15-16 mpg...running speed limit, not much over....Towed 5er in my sig with both of the these trucks and now tow it with the 13 Ram in my sig....

again, don't have all the pictures just more facts if you need them or want them.

Apparently NC Hauler and I have almost identical trucks (2012) and specs:

    - 2012 Crew Cab/Long Bed
    - DRW
    - 4.10 gears
    - 4x4

My towing numbers have been from approximately 8.0 to 11.0 towing. I kind of remember a 11.5 tank but I'm not positive.

My non-towing average seems to be 13 mpg highways at just over the speed limit. My best non-towing tank was 16.3 mpg.

My fifth wheel weighs right about 14,500 pounds depending on water and load.

I now have the 2013 in my above signature, but did have the 2012 as you described in Longhorn trim. sounds really close as far as mpg, most of my towing is done in the mountains. Was also my daily driver.
