Ram 6 vs 8 speed

all else being equal, engine, rear end ratio, what's the difference between the 6 speed and 8 speed offered by Ram as far as towing is concerned
  • You can get a 6 speed in one of the base model 1500s but I would not the 8 is dramatically better with better towing & economy. I'd take the 3.21 8 over a 3.92 6 speed.

Ditto they should have the 8 speed behind both the HD gassers.

I have a 3.92 8 speed behind a tuned Ecodiesel. 345,000 towing TTs up to 9,100 pounds not the first problem with it. Change the fluid & filterpan every 100k.
  • the new Cummins has past 900ft lbs, so it would be maxed out of the showroom with a diesel, but the gas engine could work.
  • I don’t understand why they don’t offer the 8 spd with the 6.4 2500. The 8HP90 ZF used in the Hellcat can handle up to 900 lb ft of torque.

Can you even choose these days? The 8 speed is the auto you get in a 1500 regardless of engine, and the 6 speed is the auto you get in a 2500/3500 regardless of engine.

    That's what I thought.
But if they're offering the 8 speed ZF with a Cummins it would be a rockin combination.

  • I used to tow in 5th and 6th, with my 6.7 1 ton ram. 4th only if I had to drop under 55.
  • More gears to stay in the torque bands.. But thats an open ended question because...

    1. They will defiantly not be the same rear IMO..
    2. The six speed if you can get the 3;92 rear would be way better.
3 The 8 speed most likely has 3;21's..

    So it depends...

    6 speed 3;92 tows 10000.... 8 speed 3;21 80000.... From my findings...
