Seems like everybody agrees on 15,000 miles. All I can say is that pricey as they seem, they are much less pricey than needing a tow because the filter clogged up on you.
I'm guessing the OP is driving his first ever diesel. And yes, compared to the gas filters in cars and trucks, diesel fuel filters are both expensive and need replaced much more often.
See, the thing is, diesel fuel in North America is really crappy. At the same time, modern diesel fuel injection systems operate at such huge pressures with such small orifices that you can't tolerate particulates in there, lest the injectors clog up or wear out, and THOSE things are really expensive.
So, just between you and me, I'd change the fuel filter at the recommended interval, and carry a spare, just to be on the safe side. All it takes to ruin your day, is getting a load of bad fuel and needing a fresh fuel filter while out in the middle of nowhere.
I'll mention, having had the fuel filter clog up on me a couple times in the first 100,000 miles on my Jeep, even though I changed the filter at the recommended 24,000 miles, I've gone to changing it at 18,000 miles instead, just to prevent that sort of nonsense.
