Time and miles. I change engine oil, oil filter, fuel and air filters annually. BALDWIIN and the MOPAR revised air filter. I may or may not reach 15k miles per calendar year, but an annual change (truck now at 195k miles/ten years) and carrying spares keeps trouble a little farther away, hopefully. The way the truck is used is the second cosideration. High loads and high heat shorten intervals, for example.
For ones thinking -- to get feelings aligned with same -- it is helpful to consder how long the vehilce will be kept, and approximately how many miles it will accumulate. Slightly more frequent service than book is not expensive considered in this light, and searching out best suppliers allays concerns over reliability.
I don't want the cheapest and I don't necessarily need the most expensive. What I do need is a plan, and to stick to it. Factory intervals shortened somewhat, and quality products sourced solves this problem. The truck will wear in other ways and it is to this that I need pay more attention (not just brakes/tires, but suspension/steering, etc.) as replacement/repair PRIOR to failure is, IMO, the best way to ensure longest-life at highest reliability with lowest cost.
