we're down to a couple of choices that fit our budget a 4 year old Toyota tundra, big v8, 4wd, all the usual bells and whistles, 40,000 miles, $28000 new (demo) ram 1500, hemi, 6 speed 1500, 4wd...

If the RAM had the 8 speed, that's a great transmission. 6 speed?? But anyway, I would pick the Toyota. Like you say, they are solid.
I would only buy the RAM if I also bought a lifetime max care contract from Chrysler; it's unlimited mileage coverage and would almost certainly pay off if I kept the truck for the long term (10-20 years).
If you do pick the RAM, I've read that the 5.7L dipstick has historically been off by a quart; oil should be added to the specified quantity, at which point the stick will say it's 1 quart low, but it isn't.
