Ram 1500s have been at the bottom of the payload scene for quite some time. Yes, you can find them optioned so heavily that they at or under 1000 lbs. Two popular options that are not necessary (IMHO) but are quite heavy are the bedside storage compartments, and the four corner air suspension. Without those, the payload is closer to the competition (that doesn't offer them).
My available payload is 1368 lbs, but perhaps more important, is the fact that I have over 1200 lbs of cushion before I reach my GAWR. No, I have no intention of pushing that, but it's nice to know it's there. Most of the other half tons bump up much closer to their GAWR. At least they did when I was shopping them.
