we're down to a couple of choices that fit our budget a 4 year old Toyota tundra, big v8, 4wd, all the usual bells and whistles, 40,000 miles, $28000 new (demo) ram 1500, hemi, 6 speed 1500, 4wd...

Either of those would be great for that TT. Any half ton would be fine. Don't believe the BS like "Ram is weakest" or " 6 speed is junk" or "toyota is garbage". They are completely false statements fuelled by personal bias and garbage "online polls". Yes, some had issues like ib516 pointed out (with a link for proof- thank you!) but a lot of these so called issues are typically people blowing things out of proportion.
Put your butt in both and see which you prefer. I gravitate to Ram because they made a truck that suits ME, but maybe not everybody. The yotas seem pretty stout too.
