Well I know in a time of war I would rather not have to depend on buying my bullets from an over seas manufacture or foreign owned company. Just saying. I would suspect a Japanese citizen would tell you the same.
Both companies build an excellent choice for the OP's needs. Some of the other useless blathering that gets done in 1/2 ton or especially Toyota & Ram threads gets old. People with a chip. Payload is such a useless term in towing threads and is often beat about by those who know little about setting up a safe stable tow. Axle limits & the weight distribution between them is far more useful. My 14 Ram 1500 is 3,900 each axle & is quite comparable to Ford or Chevys standard axles as is Toyota's I'm sure. CVWR is also more useful for safety. Then consider GVWR and actual truck or scaled weight. Not some number on a payload sticker that is to help the consumer know what he can put in his bed/cab.
This idea of check the payload sticker then estimate the hitch bed & cab weights is an ill conceived notion. Make sure the TT GVWR is equal to or less than the TV max tow rating. If the wet TT is going to be over 5k use a WDH set it up & adjust your loading per scale results to assure that you are at or below all rated limits. Naturally if your TT is actually at it's GVWR and or your TV is heavily loaded then you need a bigger truck and common sense might be able to determine that without a scale.
Apologies to OP don't want to hijack.
