we're down to a couple of choices that fit our budget a 4 year old Toyota tundra, big v8, 4wd, all the usual bells and whistles, 40,000 miles, $28000 new (demo) ram 1500, hemi, 6 speed 1500, 4wd...

Good post camp n family. But the GVWR for my Ram is 6950 not 6,900. Just saying. And I suspect all the truck manufacturers under rate the axle / rear compared to what the axle mfg rates it at. Like Toyota Ram does this also.
RinconVTR, In the modern era computer designed & built trucks that are computer monitored controlled and run. Reliability has mostly to do with proper maintenance & lack of abuse and a lot less to do with the Mfg. A new Ram & a new Toyota both maintained properly have about the same chance of say lasting a million miles. The rest is perception & marketing. Who is buying them how are they being used or abused and how are they being maintained.
