UH. Maybe you want to re phrase that. The air activates the FRICTION brakes to stop a vehicle.
Still off a bit ,air keeps the brake shoes away from the drums.
Spring activated- air released.
This really has nothing to do with this thread but I hate that incorrect info is being put out especially by someone that should know because they drive a "big rig". The parking brake is spring applied on an air brake system and it does take air to release but it also takes air pressure to apply the brakes. If the system drops below 60 psi then the parking brake valve will pop which dumps the air pressure in the spring applied side of the system cause the brakes to lock. The spring applied part of the system is only the parking brake system.
So, like was said, they are friction brakes just like what's on a light duty truck.:W
