Those of us that need access to the bed while the trailer is hooked up would LOVE a design like this. Additionally, you can reach things in the bed without having to lean across the down tailgate. I can imaging lots of good reasons for this design. The main drawback would be that it couldn't be nearly as weight bearing as the standard tailgate.
