My sister had a similar issue with her four kids. She swapped out her vehicle for a full size 3/4 ton van. Lots of room for kids, stuff, bikes, and gives them ability to tow a heavier trailer.
And then I am stuck with a vehicle that gets really lousy gas mileage and is too big 75% of the year.
Unfortunately that's the nature of the beast.
I've researched a lot of rv's for ourselves, family and friends over the years and apart from a hybrid configuration, you will be hard pressed to find essentially 4-5 individual sleeping accommodations with a minimal tongue weight. Inevitably bigger will be heavier. Hybrids are exactly how rv manufacturers addressed these needs.
For many of us we bought trucks to cater to rv size needs and yes, they did just sit there when not being used. Today's trucks are so much better on fuel mileage that having a second vehicle was no loner necessary. My current '14 Ram truck gets twice the mileage than my '03 Ram truck.
