First, not trying to start a war, but I think in general, the OP just wanted to rant about his theories of the RV industry as a whole. He did however ask for thoughts.
That said, as far as length with vehicle wheelbase, you can do what you want with whatever you want. You should have a moral code about you that says you are not going to endanger others on the road just because you think your truck can handle it. From things I have read in my limited time in the RV world, it is generally accepted that a longer wheelbase vehicle will tow a longer trailer better. I think it is a stability factor.
As for doing it with your current vehicle, there is probably a few things you could pull with it that I wouldn't. I mean we have people running around pulling TT's with charger srt's, lol. Sometimes though, maintenance goes up as a result.
In the end what you are wanting is called having your cake and eating it too. Lots of us have been there, tried, and in end failed. I bought my trailer after going over and over and over again seeing what others were pulling with the same truck as my wife's. Thoroughly convinced that I had done my due diligence and upgraded the truck sufficiently enough that we wouldn't have any issues, we brought it home, and it was fine. Then we set out on our first "real" trip, kids and all.
I sold my car the next week for a bigger truck than my wifes.
Does it suck having a car payment when both our vehicles were paid off? Yup. But I am happier knowing that I am safe, my family is safe, and others around us are safe while we go RV'ing.
Funny thing is, I love my truck more than my car now lol.
Therein lies the rub, because when you do find that perfect one for your truck, you may find that it wasn't so perfect after all. Then when your trading in one of your vehicles, you might be upset that you would have bought a bigger unit had you known.
We were lucky, the unit we got is what we wanted and still is. But I think sometimes people tailor the trailer to the truck, and find out they need a bigger truck anyways.
