Raptor EB on the Ike

Did anyone else notice the engine oil temp was pushing 240*F or so during the test...in cold weather? Wow. Check out about 14:45 or so time stamp. Best use good oil in the Raptor. What does it call for? I'm assuming full synthetic.

Raptor vs Rebel IKE

  • Enjoyable video, shows how far trucks have come. I wouldn't recommend dialing in your trailer brake controller on packed snow. Shows how much electronics come into play; my guess is that if the Ram's transmission chose a gear that spun the engine at 5,000 RPM on the downhill like Ford's, then engine braking would have been on par.
  • I installed an intake on my 3.5L EB just to hear the turbos. The engine was so quiet that you can hear them spool at the slightest of throttle input. Man I loved that sound. As they uses to say in the F150 forums. The difference between the 5.0L and the 3.5 EB is that you can hear the 5.0L as you pass it, but you can't hear the EB as it passes you.
  • Funny part is, I think only the 3.5 EB gets the fake sound. The 2.7 EB sounds pretty awesome by itself.

My hemi runs those high oil temps when pulling too. The truck doesn't seem to mind, and the oil remains serviceable. I'm still using dino.

I think they recorded a 5.7 Hemi so the EB would sound like a real truck. :)

LOL... Was wondering how long it was going to take to issue the full story.

Anyways with the release of API SN oil back in 2011 it was designed to handle the heat of turbo charged engines so you don't need any special synthetic oils at 240F since they're other areas on the engine that are much hotter.

Having said that what I did notice was the easy 3k rpms the EB was pulling the Ike while maintaining 60mph.

It didn't look about the same to me. At 30:42 of the video, the Hemi looks to be at 264F while the Raptor never seems to hit 240F and staying around 235F.
  • I'm also guessing those engines call for full synthetic. At first glance 240 doesn't seem too high to me for a working engine, as it's good to have oil temps north of 220 to burn off moisture, but if the readings are taken in the sump, I'm sure there are areas of the engine where the oil is much hotter?
