I have a 2012 F150 XLT Supercrew 4x4 5.5' bed. 5.0 w/3.55 rear. My GVWR is 7350# and payload is 1625#, standard tow package. I'm pulling a Jay Flight 28BHBE, 7000# dry and around 7800# loaded. Tongue weight is around 900# depending on how I load the trailer, using a 1K/10K Equalizer hitch.
It pulls and handles just fine and I'm within my capacities, although close. The 5.0 puts out a goood bit of torque, it's not far off the EcoBoost although the curve is different, obviously.
I was in your position looking for the Max Tow package, at the time the 6.2 was not available, and I didn't want an EcoBoost.
The Lariat, Platinum and upper trim lines will cost you a good bit of payload, so I wouldn't be looking at those if you want a "truck" to tow and haul with.
I'm pretty happy with mine as it is. Unless you are towing bigger than mine, I wouldn't sweat it on the Max Tow package....
