We replaced ours with a fabric I got from Ebay. Wife and I did it ourselves in about two hours. I think the fabric was about $150 for a 14' awning. We watched some youtube videos to see how to do it. There are some tricks and there are springs but it was pretty easy. Your quote seems high but they do need to mark up to stay open.
