Real simple fix for a thin tent end mattress

Our tent end mattress was simply too thin for a good night's sleep. I woke up in the middle of the night in pain the first day we tried to sleep in it. We both sleep on our sides, which means hip or neck pain if our mattress isn't thick enough.

BUT we couldn't simply replace our mattress with a thicker one, for when it's folded up it already sticks out too far into the room; Any thicker and it simply won't fit. Our mattress folds in half (seam down the middle) for travel thus it's double-thick when folded.

And I didn't want to put in a mattress that I had to stow away during travel; We're already tight on space and weight, and I just didn't want the hassle of yet another item to move around during setup and tear-down.

I didn't really want an air mattress because I tend to feel my wife move in the night on one.

Finally, I've already spent many more bucks on this rig than I'd hoped, so I really wanted an inexpensive solution.

Ta-dah. I went down to Walmart and got an Intex Queen Prestige Downy Airbed Mattress with Handheld Battery Pump. The air mattress went underneath the foam mattress.

Bingo! I think I slept better than at home. The foam mattress on top reduced the shifting back and forth that I felt from my wife. The combo takes up hardly any more space than the original mattress; I simply folded the air mattress around the foam mattress like a taco. Setup should be quick; Lay both out, blow up the one with the pump and done. And best of all, it only cost $21.

I love simple, cheap solutions :B

  • I've read several reviews on several different brands of air mattresses, and they can be hit-or-miss. Coleman has the best reputation in the lower-end mattresses, so if you're worried about it lasting, go with that.

Here's a good site. They go to the review websites (Consumer Reports, Amazon) and give a consolidated report.

Be forewarned: Most air mattresses tend to stretch at first, and they seem to be losing air when in reality they're just getting larger and thus have more volume to fill, and thus require more air. Takes a few nights to settle.
  • I am interested to see how long this mattress lasts you, as I too would like a more cushy sleeping space in our hybrid.

  • I have been using air mattresses for years. DW couldn't sleep on the original mattress in the pup or the htt.
