The Tundra is a great truck known for its reliability but also for its thirst for fuel. The 5.7l iforce engine is bulletproof but hasn’t been updated since its debut in the 2007 model. There is no direct injection, cylinder deactivation or other fuel saving measures available.
I averaged 18mpg empty (hand calculated), mixed driving conditions. This was on par with a friends Ram 5.7l Hemi. Mileage dropped to 10mpg towing our 7600lbs 34’ trailer. My truck was slightly modified with a lift and oversized all terrain tires which did decrease mileage slightly from stock. I would have no problem paying slightly higher fuel costs to own another.
The Tundra also has a small 26gal fuel tank but newer models have a 38gal tank standard on higher trim levels, optional on the others. A must if towing regularly.
If you search on here for Tundra threads you will see a lot of posts. A lot of haters and trash talkers from non owners with no real experience but those who do own, or have owned, love them and have little to complain about.
