While you could probably get away with a typical 15 series truck. You may want to look at 25 series trucks. Yes MPGs will be a bit less, not a lot. You will have upwards of 4000 lbs of payload, vs 2000 lbs of payload. A family of 4, depending upon your sizes, 300-400 to upwards of 800-1000 lbs if you are all on the larger size. Add in 700-800 lbs of HW for a 25' TT, maybe some firewood, bikes, generator in the bed. You will have the suspension part of your equation over loaded.
I used a SW 3500, about same GVWR/payload as todays 25 series truck to tote a Prowler 24C around. Trailer was 6500 or so on the axels, 700 HW. My family of 6 at its heaviest, ie 4 adult sized teenagers......your kids may want friends along.......we usually put 2500-3000 lbs cargo etc into the truck! Ran down the road in the 14-16K range total......
Mulch weighs 700-800 lbs cubic yard if reasonably dry, 1000+ if wet. Rock is 3000 lbs a cubic yard. Topsoil is 1700-2500 lbs depending upon the organic vs mineral ratio! With this in mind, I think you would find a 4door 25 series crew to be the BEST truck from an overall standpoint, vs a 15 series. Even if the 1500 has the same V8 as the 2500 model! Or 5.4 in the Fords, GM's 6.0.......
