Lumpty

I own a '16 F150 Screw FX4 4x4 with a 5.0 and 3.31 gears. Rated to tow 8900lbs, and has a 2000lb payload. Very capable truck for what it is. Downsized to it out of an '11 F250 6.7 4x4 crew cab for a variety of reasons. Around town mileage is 15, highway at 70-75 20. both numbers spot on what the 6.7 did. Solo mileage is what matters. Diesel or gas, towing fuel use is IMHO kind of incidental to the overall cost of things, unless you hotshot for a living.
As for which truck is best, I stayed with a Ford because over the years, while I've had 2 stinkers out of 7 trucks, the brand has been good to me (the '11 was flawless as a replacement for a bought back '10 6.4). Be careful with late model GM trucks as the cylinder deactivation system can be problematic as well as the chassis being susceptible to freeway hop. Rams are generally OK but the only known issue being occasionally fussy dash electrics. A Tundra was #2 on my list, but the design is getting old, and the mileage as mentioned is significantly less than other brands.
In the end buy what you fits you best.
