I suppose that's true of any vehicle but I've come here to ask what other's have experienced in terms of 1/2 ton truck mileage when they aren't towing.
Welcome to the forum.
My wifes '16 1500 chevy crew cab short bed 5.3 with 355hp/383 torque 6l80e 3.42 axle 17" OEM tires/wheels gets 19-20 average mpg on a couple of trips we had to make last summer from NE Oklahoma to Salt Lake City, UT (1240 miles one way).
Best tanks were in the 21-22 mpg range. Worst tanks were in the 17.5-18 mpg fighting 35-38 mph headwinds in Kansas.
We live in a rural area so no city driving. The truck gets 18-18.5 mpg on average with county roads and secondary rural 2 lane highways.
All pencil figures.
If your going to tow don't choose a wimp motor. Ford 3.5 EB or the 5.0 engine........GM 5.3/6.0 engines......Rams 57 hemi with 3.90 gearing will make towing that size trailer so much better/easier without all the rpm racket.
