They might work but you will need to adjust your performance expectations towing right at the very max. Driving may seem like quite an effort at times. Some are OK with that and others are miserable with anxiety. Don't expect to load much into the truck bed.

The 10K figure is the max weight for the trailer, nothing to do with what the truck can tow. I see nothing wrong with his going with the trailer he wants, just keep it at the weight he heeds to be at until another truck is on his radar. We tow 10K with our 1500 here in the west and it does a fine job. He does NOT need an F550 to tow the trailer he wants.
