I may be wrong but I am almost sure the new GM one tons with the Duramax and 10 speed Allison has a 3:42 rear gear as the only option.

Depends on whether you are buying gas or diesel.
Because diesel engines have all that low-end torque they don't need to have low-geared diffs. Gas engines need rpms to develop torque so they are the ones you can still buy with 4.10 or 4.30 ratios.
I have a gas rig with V-10 gas engine that came with 3.73 gears and as someone above said, every time it came to a grade it downshifted and the tach soared to 3000 - 3500 rpm. I regeared it to 4.56 gears - made all the difference in the world as far as needing to downshift.
My diesel also came with 3.73 gears, but even though it is packing the camper and pulling the jeep, there is so much torque at 1600 rpm that it does not need to downshift at all. Just motors on over the hill effortlessly.
