My Dad used to have a Jeep pick up made in 1950. The stock engine was a low horsepower straight 6 the old Blue Flame Special. The previous owner had replaced that engine with a small block Chevy. The truck had 4:88 gears. Dad added an overdrive unit for going down the highway. The truck could do a wheel stand, but it was never that dependable.
I have had lots of friends that are exploration geologists working around the world. One guy described a one ton Ford truck in Indonesia that had a 4 cylinder diesel in it with a 6 speed trans and a split rear axle. It did fine in the hills with 4 people in.
Truck engineers have done a good job of matching up engines, trans, and gear ratios.
