Recommended service?

Clean fuel, clean filters, equal clean injectors.
Sounds like a profit center for the dealer.

#1. No need to clean your injectors. You have fuel filters to clean your fuel.

#2 DO NOT POWER FLUSH YOUR TRANNY. Allison say's NO to power flushing.


Please read #3. If any shop recommends a "power" flush on an Allison 1000 I would not let them work on my lawn mower.

Tranny flush was not a power flush, just drained, put on new filter and added tranny fluid. The work was done at the local dealership where we have gotten all service done.
FWIW, we have had no symptoms of injector problems; no smoking, lugging, or loss of power. Sounds like they were just trying to make some extra money. If we had done all the flushes they were pushing, brake fluid, power steering, fuel system and engine coolant, it would have come to nearly $1,000. Personally, I have never heard of flushing brake fluid or power steering unless you have had some incident that caused a break in that system.

Your truck came with a very valuable feature....the owner's manual. In it you will find every recommended service and at what intervals those services should be performed. Since it was written by the people who designed and built your truck, it should be the only source considered for information about service procedures. Always remember, the service writer works on commission, and the technicians only get paid when they work on a vehicle, so their interests are in selling services, often times unnecessary services.

The power steering system uses the same stuff that goes into the transmission.
Why would you never change the power steering fluid? Brake fluid absorbs moisture. Engine coolant doesnt last forever.
As mentioned read the owners manual.

Please explain why it's called a "Tranny flush".

Best trans service is a fluid exchange that actually changes out ALL the old fluid. Never have understood a half AZZ trans service that just drops pan and refills and leaves several quarts of old fluid.

Drain and fill, only at the recommended interval, and even then I'd be hard pressed to rationalize.

Power steering and trans, same fluid? I would highly doubt that, but don't own a GM.

gees, that "tech" must have worked at the Toyota dealer that I go to for service. Exact same thing they sprung on me on the last service.

Sure it is a gasser but they wanted to do the big "service" on my induction and injector system. :h

This is why you should avoid dealerships for routine service. Find a trusted mechanic, this stuff is not rocket science.

You realize the "Service Writer" is on commission, right? Gets a cut of everything he "sells". Friend of mine is a Service Writer and makes over $100K a year. Who pays his salary? That's right; you do.

Next time the dealer springs this BS on you, have them point to where the service manual says it's required.

For instance, "Fuel Injection Service" is NEVER required unless there is some problem with the performance of the vehicle and it's CAUSED by the fuel system.


Here's the BS the Dealer pulled on me with my wife's Chevy Traverse when I brought the car in for their Loss Leader $38 Dexos Oil Change with free tire rotation. The car had 11,000 miles on it:

"WOW (acting surprised), YOU'RE DUE FOR A 10,000 MILE SERVICE!!!! IN FACT, IT'S OVER DUE!!!!"

Me: OK, how much does that cost?

DEALER: "$329"

Me: OK what do you do for $329?


DEALER: "CLEAN AND ADJUST THE BRAKES (The Lie: There's no adjustment on disc brakes. And why clean them?).

"CLEAN THE THROTTLE BODY" (The Lie: Throttle body cleaning is not even on the Chevy maintenance schedule and is NEVER recommended unless there is some problem with the throttle body.

REPLACE THE CABIN AIR FILTER (I do that myself for about 12 bucks)

CHANGE THE OIL AND FILTER (I can already get you to do that for $38)

So in review, the only thing I needed was an Oil Change and "maybe" a cabin air filter.

Sorry, I'll pass for $329.

The moral of the story; tell the dealer no thanks and find a good honest local mechanic. Hundreds of them out there.

Seems like "Up Selling" in the service departments are becoming the common mode of operation....
