Red and the S&S live again

We left on the 19th for our new adventure and due to all the construction on 395 in Cali we arrived 2 hours later than planned at Goose Lake CG. The WORST skeeters I've ever seen in my life were there to greet us. We were going to stay for 2 nights to unwind but the skeeters killed that idea VERY quickly. We struggled through the night trying to sleep with the constant onslaught from the skeeters, but the tent got over-run and we packed up early the next morning and headed out.

Red and the S&S had been sitting for almost 3 years in the side yard of our sons house, they were in terrible condition to say the least. Over the last week I have gotten all systems up and running in both units and Red will go in Monday for some needed work before the trip back home. The ceiling in the kitchen area is missing due to leak from the solar panel, it wasn't caught till spring, so the damage was extensive. The ceiling panels were removed and everything was dried out, treated, and sealed. The framing structure is in good condition, so we just need to replace the ceiling panels. While were at it we will add some more light to that area since it has always been rather dark at night.

We are presently camping in the S&S in the front yard of our sons house while visiting and getting the rig ready to go back home. We missed the 'ol rig and are happy with the buy-back and Molly, our newest companion approves of it completely and has already mastered the stairs and getting in the bed.

We will be leaving on the 2nd with the Ranger in tow on a trailer. We look forward to "The S&S Restore/Update Thread" part 2.
  • Congrats on getting back your old combo..To bad about the solar leak..Good luck on your trip home
  • Its always nice to get on the road again especially in a camper have fun.
  • I love a happy reunion. That 11 foot S&S has about the best floor plan of any non slide truck camper ever made. Great amount of storage. Ample headroom in queen bed. If only the bathroom were 2 inches wider and longer...

Good luck with the repairs, I know it's in capable hands, and enjoy your trip.

Yup, love this floorplan, and the bathroom is a little small and low for my 6'1" 220lb frame...lol, but I've long since adapted to it. We really can't wait to dive into it and finish what we started so many years ago. I don't think we will ever get rid of it again, even to family, when it's done it will be our go-to rig cause the TC will rarely be off Red.

Red only has 131,000 original miles and pulls like a freight train if asked...he just gets kinda thirsty, and I'm working on that. I figure if I can get a reliable 10.5 mpg on regular with the TC I'm ahead of the game, cause that's more than any Moho I've owned got, and they can't go where Red can...LOL.

Yours with 131K, mine now has 160K....

<>10.0 with the camper, <> 11 with non-ethanol gas...Now nearly impossible to get. Although when traveling through Texas, La, Al and NM many times I was able to get no ethanol.
I can tell the difference.... We know that a 10% loss in milage is a 10% loss in power!

When towing our Zuke or Baja It cost 1 mpg.

I like hearing that..I bought my old (No-Name yet) with 89K on it,now were in the 90 something...But not 91K..

Long live the mighty EF-460...Right at 14 mpg empty over Lolo pass to Missoula and 11.6 back loaded over the same pass loaded.

I have not seen that yet but I have to tell you, being an old hard core Chevy 454 guy,the 1994 460 efi smokes them (plural) in every way..

Ford made the 460 for so many years that one could get about any HP/TQ rating he wanted with mods..A fairly standard 460 long block (Online) has a 575hp/575tq rating. But mpg isn't in the 14-15 range I assume.

We will see how he does on the way home, you can get non-ethanol premium in certain places here in Oregon, but it's hard to find. I will get about 9.5 or so on the way home I imagine...maybe less since I'll be towing the Ranger on a car trailer.
