Refer vent and plumbing vents pj

Why do TC's have to have roof vents for the refer? Why can't we use a side vent? Same goes for the plumbing vents...can't they go out thur the wall and use a marine style clam shell cover? CLAM
Point being trying to eliminate roof items and possible leaks.
  • I have an older Tcer and mine only has the side vents and no fan for the fridge. I can see that a fan would help to keep it cooler and may do that but it has been like that since 1992 and no issues.
  • I have a side vent refer in my 5th wheel. When the outside temps start into the 70's, there is a fan mounted on the back of the refrigerator that comes on. you can hear this fan running when your inside the camper.
When its in the 80's the fan will run more often. in the 90's it runs almost all the time. Its not loud as much as it a vibration that carries through the whole 5th wheel.

I have looked into the fan location, and I don't see how you can move it, or even change the fan without pulling the refrigerator out.
  • Is there anyone out there that can take a few pics of how the refer side vent and fan system are put together and provide details? THX

Would you investigate (no rush) to see if it has some sort of a thermostat or timer or whatever, PLS! Pictures are always good too if it is a unique install. THX.

  • My pop-up TC has side vents for the fridge and for the plumbing. I've never smelled a thing from the sewer vents. And the fridge works just fine.
  • MKish,

Your island sink in the house likely has a vaccume breaker under the sink cabinet downstream of the p-trap. Your house has a plumbing vent to the roof at at least one point before the clean out.
  • Side vents for the refer are used on slides only as they don't vent as well as roof one's. The plumbing vents will probably work either way, but Ewwww, it's icky to see it and know that it goes to the black tank. out of site out of mine... LOL
  • Popup TCs (and popup trailers, for that matter) have side vents. They don't work as well and often require mods like baffles and fans to circulate the air better.

I have no idea what kind of plumbing vent is in my popup TC. It's not on the roof, and it works just fine. (I also don't have a rooftop vent in my house's kitchen island sink.) I think you're safe substituting that one with a different style.
  • The heat rises, so the natural place is the roof. Unless you power a side vent, heat won't dissapate as fast and could cause a fire hazard. It's not just trailers that are designed like that- we have them in our MH as well.
