Register of travel trailers

Just curious if most of the travel trailer owners register their trailer?

Most of the trailers i find online like in craigslist, their pink slip is old and would only show the original owner in it and not updated with succeeding owners. So is it not usual to really register a travel trailer? Only few owners actually register their trailers?

True. And what is really important is having a clear "Title" to the trailer of any motor vehicle. That is the proof of ownership.
  • In Indiana you MUST have a title and a registration. If someone sells a vehicle, the new owner has only "x" number of days to re-title it. If he fails to register it for road-worthiness at that time, he does not have to. But, if he decides to later register it for road-worthiness, he'll have to pay the difference from the time it was titled to the present moment. I know... that really bites! If you fail to re-title it within "x" number of days, you are fined a fee. So, often when a person sells to another private individual, they leave the date open and then when the new owner takes it to the BMV for a re-titling in their name, they put the current date in there to avoid the penalty. Is it right? NO. But people do it all the time.

In Indiana, if you don't get a clear title at the time of purchase .... don't do the purchase!

Check with the DMV where you live first. In Ca, it's a real pain to register an RV that doesn't have a title. Or current registration that matches the seller. And yes, in Ca, they all must be registered.
what if the previous owner didn't register the trailer in his or her name? Is it still possible to still be able to register it to the new and current owner?

    Same in IL.
  • I'm guessing that you are looking at old junk trailers that have been sitting unused in someone's back yard for years. Around here a trailer must be registered/licensed to be towed or even to sit on a seasonal site.
  • I have had 3 TT's and have registered each one. Now if you are looking to put one on a permanent site then I would not bother registering it.
  • sometimes the buyer will not register the trailer if they plan on selling it right away. they just have the original owner sign it over- saves them from having to register it their name, pay plate fees, taxes, etc. when we had our TT on the consignment sales lot I called the BMV (IN) and was told it had to be registered.
