I just read an article ...
You must have missed the one recent report about how CA now ranks 50th in quality of life. Dead last. It's based on how the gov't treats it's citizens i.e., taxes, fees, regulations, economic opportunities/affordability, not how many sunny days there are in a year.
I was born and raised here in CA. Until I actually lived in another, freer state, I had no idea just how bad CA was. Yeah, sure the weather's great. But for me, I live smack dab in the middle So Cal. I live somewhat close to the beach. Big deal. Haven't gone in over 2 years. To drive ANYWHERE outside of the greater OC/LA area during the day will take you at least 2-3 hrs. or longer. So, yes, while CA is a beautiful state, living in concrete town makes it difficult to enjoy anything beyond, especially when your NOT RETIRED and mostly have only weekends.
Then there's the lack of RV/camper overnight parking ordinances the various cities and counties have. Granted, the homeless parking their beat down rigs all along the coast and everywhere else ruined it for the rest of us. But then you have to ask: Why all the homelessness to begin with? Why does my wife have to drive past tent city everyday on her way to work, right behind a Costco no less?
For us, there's more than just taxes pushing us away. A lot more. Sure, we really don't want to spend our remaining years essentially working for the CA gov't., but we really don't want to fund the political agenda that's been unfolding here for many years. It's not ever going to get cheaper or easier to live and exist in this state if you're a middle class, taxpayer. You can take that to the bank!
As far as "young" people wanting to move here...well, young people are generally dumb and make bad decisions. Then you hit about 35 or 40 and wise up. I'll be turning 50 in a couple years and dare I say, I wised up years ago and it's time to move on.
