Remote Start on F-250

I don't use remote start much, and one reason is because I've yet to figure out the 'proper' technique. I can get it started, but then I get into the truck, insert the key, rotate the key to 'run' position . . . and the engine dies. So I have to restart it, anyway.

Anyone know how to get the truck moving without killing the engine? There has to be a way, and the manual doesn't explain it.
  • My 2012 F350 has the MyKey feature on the display but I have never tried to use it, or even know how it works or what it does. But my truck does not shut off when I open the door after a remote start. I just get in, put the key in, turn to ON, and it keeps running.
  • When Ford got the "better idea" of My Key, it changed the way remote start works. Now, the vehicle can be started with the remote fob but as soon as you open the door, the vehicle shuts off to prevent theft. No amount of begging or pleading with the dealer to reprogram will work (I have tried). There are "fixes" available on a number of websites but I have never been brave enough to try. So if your F250 has My Key, it will shut down! Not a "better idea" IMO!
  • It will shut off when touching the brake after being started by remote start and before key is placed in ignition. Sensing someone may be trying to steal the truck. (Without the key)

Unlock, hop in, turn the key to the run position. This will start all your gauges, radio etc..

Then depress brake and place truck into drive/reverse.
  • Mine has never died when putting the key in and turning it to ON after a remote start. Never thought about it before but I guess I never put my foot on the brake first when I do that.
  • From a google search of 'remote starts key kills':

." remote starter can also turn off the engine, or the brake pedal acts as a kill switch."
  • might be a Ford thing our Escape as soon as the key goes in the ignition the engine shuts off- even with the foot off the brake. the HHR you would just put the key in and not have to restart.
  • The brake? How strange. They're always teaching us to put our foot on the brake when shifting out of park, when starting, etc.

Well, whatever, I'll give it a try. Thanks.
  • Dont touch the brake until you have the key in the run position. My wife was doing this on her Silverado.
