That 3 way was a cold water inlet AND the bypass depending on which way valve was turned.
Did you replace it with another 3 way valve??
The other issue could be a check valve in hot outlet nipple.......they are cheap plastic junk and fail. When they fail.no hot water comes out top nipple/hot outlet.
This is a one 3-way valve set up (cold inlet and bypass with check valve in hot outlet)
This is one 3 way system with check valve removed and a hot water shutoff valve instead
This is a 3 valve system........no check valve and individual shutoff valves (cold/bypass/hot) my favorite
