Repaired the roof, replaced the bubble dome...

I took care of the nasty roof left behind by the EternaBond (EB) not sticking to the shower bubble, but adhering great to the roof itself. I documented the disaster in this thread.

I could not stand how awful it looked. I decided to take everything apart, get new parts including new bubble dome, vent and roof ladder flange thingys. I was considering a large 1-piece rubber roof but used 6" strips of EternaBond.

I carefully cleaned the EB left behind- it required physical scraping and solvent to get that adhesive off, it is not easy to do. After cleaning and prepping I laid down the EB around the perimeter, placed a strip of butyl tape putter around it, used new flathead fasteners. I let is set up before trimming the spoodge putty and finished the caulking today.

  • That's very very odd, I'm going to guess it was likely the material the original dome was made from. I just put in a brand new dome on top of the raised roof I added over the bathroom as part of my Amerigo remodel, and it stuck down to the lip with gusto (this may be working because I didn't put any caulk down beforehand as the dome ends flush with the edge of the raised ceiling sides).
  • I used EBond on my bubble years ago and it lasted 12 years. That includes covering a 6" crack that leaked. The EBond worked great.

I think it has to do with the quality of the plastics used in the shower bubble.
  • I too am surprised that it did not stick. I had heard that EB sticks to everything.

When I did my original PM I was sure to clean and de-grease everything to which the EB was intended to go. In fact, the Brak-Kleen was enough of a solvent such that it very slightly "soft-melted" the plastic so I know I was taking down the superficial finish of the old plastic. It seemed to go down fine, but when I checked it some 2 weeks later, there were water pockets under the flange. That is when I stripped the EB off as best I could and it came off of the plastic as easy as can be, but it stuck to the roof which left the nasty result of which started this thread fix.

To me that bubble is sort of a maintenance item that will need to be replaced at some point depending on the UV exposure it receives. I do not want to EVER have to go through the ordeal of needing to physically remove EternaBond. If EB is over the bubble lip then there will be the need for it.

As for now, the fix I did took a LOT of time, but I can smile at it now... especially since I can see it when sitting on my deck and it is nice and clean and white :)
  • Who the hell puts a delicate plastic dome in front of a ladder???!!!

    Nice job by the way.
