Replacing exterior door with slider

Posting for my 81 year old mom. Her TT is permanently parked at a resort and we will not be moving it. We would like to replace her existing exterior door with a glass slider. That way she could sit in her rocker and be able to look out and see the lake. I see one other trailer parked in the same location that has a double sliding door in place of the traditional exterior door (metal with a small, frosted, window at the top). We have the normal vertical clearance (about 6 feet from threshold to top of door frame plus a few inches above that) and then we have a little over 5.5 feet of horizontal space to install a door. Anyone have any experience with trying to do this?

  • What about adding Lowes Lexan panels to the screen door. She could have the main door latched open with the lexan enhanced screen door keeping in the heat and cool while still keeping out bugs and dirt. If a storm comes, she can just close the main door.
  • I had a tt 31ft with a slider that I bought new, it was a Prowler with 2 slides. I really liked it, built a nice porch and stairs for entry. I towed it from Fla to Ct. with no issues. I read you have no plans to tow it. Maybe you could check with a trailer manufacture about getting one, or at a used tt parts place.

Those are traditionally "park models" which are not traditional travel trailers and not really meant to be moved on a regular basis. They have different floor plans as well from traditional units which better allow for those type doors.

  • Unless you custom order the door set, you will need 6'8+" of vertical and 6'2" or so of horizontal rough opening to fit a standard set.
