Thanks for sharing that experience Jim. I hope that wasn't the Folsom Costco. (Bought a set of tires there for DW's car a few weeks back)
Just about any dealership can have issues. Here's a link to a whole website dedicated to Les Schwab horror stories.
http://les-schwab-tire-centers.pissedconsumer.com/I've heard that since Les passed away, things have gone downhill with the business.
As a chain, I think Les Schwab is as good as they come. I used to think that of Big-O, but that's another story. However, each store needs to earn our trust as a consumer and customer. Anyone can have a bad day and sometimes a bad manager can cause a lot of trouble before they are discovered and removed.
I rarely ever just sit in a waiting room or leave my car at a tire store. I am that pain-in-the-butt customer who hovers and the reason they have the rope and sign to warn that I'm not allowed in their work area. I want to see what's going on and perhaps get a look of what's going on behind my tire I normally don't get a chance to see well.
I really don't care if it's Costco or Les Schwab. I'll keep an eye and inspect the quality of their work during and after they perform their service. The sad thing is, not everyone is as astute at recognizing where there is a problem. You were able to spot the inordinate about of wheel weights on your rim. But could just anyone? Or the torque setting on a wheel. When at Folsom Costco, I asked and they write the torque on the work order and they use a hand torque wrench to set, not an air tool. I too check after I get home BTW.
Once my wife got a flat on her car. I swapped to the spare for her. Costco was 40 miles away, so I told her to just swing into Walmart tire and ask them to patch the flat and swap back the spare. They busted a lug doing that and said the flat was unrepairable as it was in the sidewall. I would have halted them right there, but of course she didn't realize it. I found it when she got home I went to retorque the nuts.
It happens or else neither of us would know to double check someone else's work.
