I live 130 miles from the closest interstate .
We drive US Highways 97 , 20 , and 26 which are 2 lane highways with passing lanes .
The convention in the High Desert region is to give lots of car lengths when following trucks and only passing when there are passing lanes .
Towing a 7280# gvw trailer with a 9200 # GVW diesel pickup it is best to go exactly with the truck traffic and keeping distance both front and rear .
If a truck is slow I utilize that torque and pass quickly in the passing lanes .
Before $ 4.00 diesel I would tow my TT at 63 and my boat at 65-66 .
Now I am a couple of mph slower to pick up another mpg .
It is my observation that those who mostly drive freeways do not give as much of a space buffer as those who mostly drive 2 lane highways .
We can all go faster if there is a longer space buffer .
And it is less tiring than following close .
