Riding While Towing

I know it is illegal, but I am thinking of getting a travel trailer and wondered how much of a concern it really was and if you do it anyway.

Thanks in advance.

The fact that it is illegal might tell you something? Did you ever see what is left of a TT after a wreck?
Did you ever see what's left after a plane crash? And it's legal to fly in one. Life is full of risks.
  • It depends on who is riding in the trailer. If it's a bunch of convicted child molesters, then it's a perfectly good idea.
The picture posted by downtheroad confirms my theory. :)

Other than that, it's a really bad idea.

I would suggest you watch "The LONG, LONG, LONG TRAILER" Movie to see how much "fun" it might be..

    "Product Description
    Long, Long Trailer, The (DVD)

Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, at the height of the their fame in "I Love Lucy," take a big-screen road trip in a car with a Long, Long Trailer. As they travel across the United States, everything that can go wrong does go hysterically wrong for the first couple of comedy as they try to celebrate their honeymoon on the road. An overloaded trailer, an isolated mountain road and a judge who hates trailers all add up to a very, very funny movie.

Besides making television history as the producers and stars of television's immensely popular I Love Lucy and The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour, Lucille Ball and her husband, Desi Arnaz, starred in three quite agreeable feature films. The second of these, 1954's The Long, Long Trailer, in gorgeous Technicolor and directed by Vincente Minnelli, is a somewhat allegorical tale of a newly married couple who invest in a 40-foot trailer as their first home--and immediately regret it. Well, at least Arnaz's character does; he's the one who has anxiety attacks over operating electric brakes while steering up and down one-lane, mountain roads. Sight gags are plentiful: a scene in which Ball tries to make beef stew, a Caesar salad, and cake in a wobbling, moving trailer is classic Lucy. But there are some genuine dramatic sequences in this handsome movie, too, and the stars rise to the occasion. --Tom Keogh"

Pay close attention to where she is in the trailer trying to prepare "diner" while MOVING down the road...

Trailers do not have "soft" suspensions and most do not have any shocks.. The ride will be very bumpy and may even have lots of swaying..

Not something that if you value ones life should be doing.. Which IS one of the reasons why bumper pull trailers are not legal to ride in..
  • There are some states where riding in a TT IS legal, Indiana being one of them. On a more practical side, is it a "wise" or a "smart" thing to do? No!

Only once did I allow someone to ride in the TT on the road. We were on vacation returning home, Trailer in tow. My mother was visiting my sister and we thought it would be nice to stop in for a few moments before and see them before the last 10 miles to home.

When we got there, my sister told me Mom was horribly sick, she thought Mom was having a heart-attack, but absolutely refused to go to the hospital or allow for an ambulance. (You just don't understand my mother ... it's a very complicated story)...

Well, she was definitely in a very bad situation and absolutely refused an ambulance, so we convinced her to go into the trailer. Yelling and screaming the whole way (it was quite a scene), we got her inside. I slammed the door, jumped in the truck and headed for the hospital. Once at the hospital, they were waiting, came inside the camper and drug her A$$ out yelling and screaming the whole way! She was in the hospital for 2 weeks, and to this day still denies she had heart problems!

It was nice to know that I was not breaking any Indiana laws by having my mother and sister ride in that trailer! So you know, there may be sometimes when it is ABSOLUTELY necessary. But, to make it a common practice is simply not very wise.

Big concern for me. Won't even consider it.
And, Welcome to the Forum...good place for questions.
