Rigid Foam Board

I am thinking of putting my camper on a piece of rigid foam board instead of the plywood that it is on now. Do you that use the foam board put the camper right on it or do you put the mat over the foam board first?

  • Thanks for the info I didn't completely think about the edges. I think for this long trip I will stay with the plywood just to make sure I don't have any issues and have to remove it half way through the trip.
  • I'm using the foam board over the rubber mat, in my 2010 Chevy longbed, to lift the camper so as to clear the sides of the pickup. I have found that it does compress slightly. Replaced a piece last season as I broke an edge off in storage. No other issues with it.

A 4x8 foot sheet oriented front to back will have crushed edges pretty quickly with your size of camper. Getting two 4x8 foot sheets and cutting them down so they fit across the bed will make them last longer and positioning the TC on top of them is less of an issue.

If you can find the 25 psi compressive strength (Owens Foamular 250) vs the 15 psi extruded polystyrene foam it will last longer. Available at most home building supply places

If you can find the Owen Corning Foamular 400, 600 or 1,000 (40, 60 or 100 psi compressive strength) or equivalent under slab XPS foam from Dow it will hold up even better. Hard to find at big box places, talk to a concrete contractor to see if he/she has a few extra pieces that they will part with.
  • I use a rubber pad that is quite heavy duty and is made for horse stalls. It hold the camper in place and makes a good platform for the camper. I believe the price was like $45.00 at a local ranch supply store.
  • Personally, I took the foam board out. It did not work for me. The normal moving/rocking of the TC would crush the edges of foam board. At one point, I used a 2x4 frame in the bed of my truck, and filled it in with the foam. To much drama (storage) for no gain. It may would be worth while in extreme cold.

It is important to make sure whatever you use extends past the edges (sides) a substantial distance.
