For example, I park in loading zones all the time and don't have to pay for a regular, metered, parking spot while shopping down town. The businesses hate me, especially the local mall, but hey! I didn't write the law. If I have commercial plates, then I can park at the yellow curb. There are other advantages too.
Not sure about where you live but in LA and a couple other California cities I found, you cannot do that unless you are "actively loading or unloading freight":
