I would disagree on your belief that half-tons can safely tow larger trailers. Just the hitch weight of an 8,000 lb trailer maxes out cargo capacity. Add to that the adverse handling of a light vehicle with a heavy trailer when confronted with sudden evasive action or braking, and there are problems just waiting to happen. But, until someone wrecks, we don't know the true limits of our vehicles.
Other than that, glad you had a good trip! Utah has some very beautiful areas. Most campers away from big cities are friendly.
I tend to try to buy fuel close to highways, either interstate or US highways, as those stations seem to have more room. In-city stations seem to buy the smallest lot they can fit a station onto, just to save on real estate costs. Good business decision, as they likely don't have many RVs trying to come through. Five a year doesn't warrant a larger, more accommodating lot. I may pay a few cents more per gallon closer to the highways, but I don't have to worry about getting around a postage stamp, either.
Enjoy your future travels!
