A WDH puts weight back on the front -- steering -- wheels and prevents overloading the rear axle. I'm sure lots of folks get away with no WDH (and some of them wonder why the steering is so light). An extra 1000 pounds on the rear axle may be fine with the truck empty but I've yet to see someone going camping with an empty truck. :)
