Roof leak

I have a 2005 Jayco hybrid. Last fall, after a heavy rain storm, I noticed there was some black/brown coloured stain on one corner of the A/C (inside the trailer). I popped open the inside cover but couldn't see anything. Next rain-fall I noticed there was some black/brown coloured water around the A/C, some spots on the floor below it, and a small amount of it inside one of the ceiling lights.

I haven't taken anything else apart yet. Do you think the leak is coming from the A/C on the roof? How is the A/C unit sealed to the top of the trailer? Any other suggestions to look at? And, why the dark coloured water?

Thanks!

  • Is the cover cracked on top?

ditto on tightening the 4 main bolts first, that's the only seal between the roof and A/C. You probably has a fresh air vent though that could allow water in if the cover is cracked. Dirt builds up under the cover so the brown water might be from that. Some simple PL premium construck adhesive on the cover could fix any visible cracks.
  • Thanks everyone!

I'll start with the bolts and see if they are loose. If not, I would guess a fault in the gasket and will tackle that next if necessary.
  • Might be dark colored from debris caught up under the A/C cover. Or maybe the roof is just black, coloring the rain water. Tightening the bolts is something good do check on every few years. Did mine last year for the 1st time.

yep I had a similar drip from the AC grille on my "new" TT and all it needed was a tightening up of the bolts. fix it right before you start piling tape/caulk all over it.

  • That's why thermal imaging survey are availed by most of the construction business to evaluate the performance and safety. Suggesting one of the prominent business. http://www.irtest.com/

  • You need to pull the a/c and replace the gasket...There are 4 bolts from inside the trailer/camper that hold the a/c in place. Possibly they are just loose???
  • I have a 2004 jayco and had a roof leak around the TV antenna. After a botched attempt last year to seal around it, the leak returned and I ended up simply removing it (never used it anyways). Patched with a product called eternabond (I think) and is good to go. I also had the brownish water I think it's just the plywood leaching, good luck.
