Roof top carriers for pop up

Hi all,

Looking for some advice for how much the roof can handle as far as weight and options for carrying 5 bikes. I used the truck bed this time, but everything else got soaked on the way there and back.

We have a 2014 rockwood premier 2317g pop up.

Thanks

  • I have found what the weights are for the gross and actual of the trailer, some I know what the total limits are, but am not sure of the roof it self, it has framing for an A/C but I don't have it. So I assume it would hold and lift a rack set up,(unloade). Just unsure if it will ruin the integrity of the roof if I put five bikes up there in the closed position.
I have looked at the rack that rockwood sells, but it blocks the front storage trunk.

I will email rockwood and ask for a roof rating.

    Thanks
  • Rockwood lists a four-bike rack as an option on the Premier series at their page for popups. It's at page bottom there.

They don't describe the rack, but I'm thinking it must be a roof rack since most pup bumpers won't carry that much weight. But I s'pose it might be bumper mount. A call/e-mail to Rockwood might be in order.
  • The ACTUAL weight of the trailer when loaded as you will be using it, subtracted from the axle weight rating (should be stamped or attached to the axles) tells you the maximum weight it CAN handle (providing that number doesn't exceed the GVWR of the trailer from the DOT safety plate on the side of the trailer). This still would depend on the tires being capable of handling the axle rating (federal law says they MUST be so capable), the wheels being able to handle the maximum pressure of the tires and all other suspension parts are equal to or greater than the axle ratings (which is usually the case and with a new trailer is almost a certenty). The main thing you need to watch is that loading to the rating of the axles doesn't exceed the GVWR (and if often does).

  • Years ago we had a starcraft popup with a hyd lift (the hyd pulled the cable) and it had an option for a roof A/C and a luggage rack so they thought it would lift a little extra.

My OFF-ROAD POPUP roof is pretty substantial in the down transport mode. Of course you would have to totally unload the roof before you can even think of raising the roof for setup...

I am thinking about adding some solar panels to the roof and I am pretty sure my electric motor lift will NOT raise the roof with three 120WATT 22 lb each panels added. I will have to arrange a quick disconnect and wait to to snap-in the panels after the roof has been raised and locked into position...
