Roof Type Question

I have a 2006 StarCraft Travelstar XLT. How do I find out what material my roof is. I think its rubber but I am not 100%. I am asking b/c I want to re-do it and out down something for general maintenance, what is the best product to do so, or is it best to pay someone to do this?

  • check out the Dicor web site. they have a clip showing how to tell what material your roof is.

When my 2006 Jayco's EDPM roof needs a good "top surface" re-coating (and its base is still solid), I'll be focusing on EDPM Liquid rubber roof. Don't know which exact product but something like - click here -

If wondering, I'd probably buy 2 x 1 gallon cans and "pace myself" around the edges and around the roof vents (and under AC unit). And when my older age body is ready for more physical work, I'd probably use their 5 gallon can do perform entire roof flat surface. Slow and steady (over 5-7 day time period) - like that old age racing turtle. LOL!

  • I will get some pictures up tomorrow after the rain passes so y'all can take a look at it.
  • Calking is the same whether it's TPO Vinyl or EPDM Rubber. Biggest difference is that rubber is a LOT more sensitive as to what materials can be used on it. Use DICOR self leveling caulking (to replace the caulk that is originally used).

  • I would do some searches on "roof sealing" or "roof seal" and see what you find. It is covered frequently on the Forums.

Each roof has it's own characteristics like being in fairly good shape or bubbling, having loose sealants, color problems, weather checking, etc. so it's difficult to suggest "do this". Some pictures or a description, at least, of your roof would certainly help. In most cases, a name brand EPDM rubber roof should last many years. If a leak does occur, it is typically around an opening or at the edges of the material and not through the rubber membrane.

Your Starcraft is getting towards the age where some repair and sealing is in order, if it's never been done. The edges around vents and pipes, the joint where the roof ends and the front/back walls meet, and the roof to sidewall joint are good places to start resealing. IMO, there are two products that standout for RV roof repair---Eternabond Tape and Geocel Tripolymer sealant. There are more than a few threads on the Forum about those and I think you'll find many pleased users. Another sealant that is commonly used is Dicor, both self leveling for horizontal surfaces, and non-leveling for vertical joints. I haven't used either but they are frequently used by the Mfg.'s of TT's and users on this Forum.
  • Dicor Self Leveling lap sealant, Eternabond tape are two good choices.
  • I guess not re-do the roof but seal up everything up there, what is the best product to use?
