3 Way fridges (gas/120v/12v) are not common anymore, most are 2-way (gas/120v). The frisge does need 12v when running on gas to power the circuit board and igniter, so that may just be an indicator light to let you know it's connected to 12v. Can you provide the make/model of the fridge?
Other option is to use an inverter and power it from 120v using the batteries...it will drain the batteries fairly quickly (within a day) because the heating element is a resistance unit like a toaster, and in hot weather will stay on a lot. i wouldn't consider this option unless you have at least two batteries installed.
